I can still remember the first time I pressed play on my yellow Sony Walkman. I felt my whole world open up. Whether it was the pop sounds of Dress You Up by Madonna, the raw emotion of You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette, or the cool jams of No Scrubs by TLC, female artists have always been the soundtrack of my life. That is why I created Neon Songstress, a space to celebrate the women who shaped music. If you’ve ever made a mixtape filled with power ballads, danced to ’80s synthpop, or sang your heart out to ’90s alternative-rock anthems, you are in the right place.
At Neon Songstress, the spotlight shines on the women who shaped the soundtrack of our lives:
- Disco queens – Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Diana Ross
- Pop icons – Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Taylor Swift
- Rock rebels – Joan Jett, Amy Lee, Stevie Nicks
- R&B powerhouses – Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Janet Jackson
- Indie trailblazers – Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush
- and more
These women shaped not just music, but culture itself. But their influence doesn’t stop there. The sounds, styles, and stories of these legendary women continue to inspire today’s artists, proving that great music transcends generations. From pop superstars to indie newcomers, you can still hear their impact in the beats, melodies, and lyrics of modern music.
Expect deep dives into legendary artists, mixtape-style playlists celebrating different eras, genres, and moods, and explorations of how today’s female musicians carry on their legacy. But music is all about connection, so from time to time, I’ll also feature male artists who influenced or collaborated with these women, drawing parallels between genres, decades, and artist styles.
One project I’m especially excited about is exploring the connection between classic Western artists and modern K-pop, with a special focus on BTS and their musical inspirations. And because music and creativity go hand in hand, I’ll also be sharing my BTS-inspired crochet project, blending my love for fiber arts with my appreciation for the group’s album cover artistry.
Neon Songstress is more than just a blog, it is a celebration of the voices that shaped us and the new ones carrying the torch. So whether you are here to rediscover old favorites, find new artists to love, or just reminisce about the songs that defined an era, I’d love to have you along for the ride.
Drop a comment, share your favorite female artists, and let’s celebrate women in music.
